s465 muncie

changing seals and gaskets on 1970 C10 4 speed 465 it has been sitting for about 25 yrs went to pull off top cover with stick shift still attached, it comes up about an inch then seems like one of the forks gets stuck is there a certain way to get the forks loose ?

What gear did you have it in? I always put it in neutral and remove the shift lever first.

You don't have to take the top cover off to take the shifter out. You press down on the round seal on the bottom, and turn it, and the shifter comes right out. But it still needs to be in neutral.

Use the shifter to engauge the reverse gear half way then the top cover should pop right off. To remove the shifter just use a screw driver and a hammer. Stick it in the stamped cover at a corner and tap down at a 45* angle counter clockwise. Should pop right out.
