gas tank original finish

Still working on my gas tank retro-fit in my 1966 c-10. Got the tank support brackets welded back into the cab floor and got the cab filler hole reopened and now getting ready to refit the tank.

So does anyone know what the original finish was for these in-cab tanks? Was it a raw metal finish or were they painted a color?

Thanks in advance, the knowledge base on this site is insane!

Re: gas tank original finish

I *think* they were painted fawn, same as the interior. Not 100% sure.

Re: gas tank original finish

What do I do now? One for paint... one for bare??

Which is correct for original. Or did it vary by assembly plant?

Ongoing....

Re: gas tank original finish

I can't find any pictures of the tank out of the '65 before I had it dipped at a radiator shop. I do remember it looking a lot different when it came back, like a galvanized look. I did paint it back fawn, and since I was doing an all stock restoration I probably did it back just like it was. But I can't remember 100% if it was painted or not.

After the trip to the radiator shop:

Painted fawn.

I've never paid a lot of attention to them as they are typically dirty, but it seems like they are mostly painted fawn color.

It must be an assembly plant thing. I've only seen fawn but others say bare, so there you go.
Lets get a count. Three out of three from Fremont, painted fawn.

In our St. Louis built '65 C10, the straps were painted fawn, but the tank itself was bare/galvanized.

My truck is a St Louis truck as well. Any more original St Louis trucks out there?

Re: gas tank original finish

Pic of my 66 tank. It is galvanized with fawn straps. IDK where it was built. Is that info in the VIN? I can't recall where to find that.

Re: gas tank original finish

Mine is from Pontiac, and looks like LJacksons, but the straps were painted black.

I'll have to check tonight to see what my former step daughters truck has. It's a '65 Chevy from Fremont.

Re: gas tank original finish

Most of the ones I have had were painted fawn or at least oversprayed fawn with black straps. Most were from fremont.

Re: gas tank original finish

I have a GMC that I "think" was built in Flint, MI

It has a plain steel tank.

The vin on it is 1002PF40921A or at least that is the number above the door on the drivers side.

Re: gas tank original finish

It looks like the answer to the OP's question is that it depends on where your truck was built.

Re: gas tank original finish

I agree that the different assembly plants had some different standards.

So far it looks like St Louis trucks were bare tanks with fawn painted straps.

I will go with this answer unless someone has better info.
