Transfer Case rebuild or buy?

So apparently my Transfer Case is completely trashed.. I've been quoted 800 bucks to send it off and get it refurbished, but I wanted to know what kind of options I have other than that. I have the 5.7 350 with a TH350 transmission..pretty much stock...are there aftermarkets that are reasonable and better?...any help would be greatly appreciated.. I believe it's the NP 205

$800 is not unreasonable for a complete reseal with some bearing/detent spring replacements. I recently paid about $700 to have a working SM465 tranny rebuilt. You will spend much more on a new transfer case (and adapter), or possibly end up with another used case with its own set of problems. The NP205 is one of, if not the stoutest case you can use. Spend the $800 and have a fresh case that will last for years to come. By the way, if you go with a transfer case that won't bolt straight up to the TH350, the adapter alone with set you back a few hundred.

Good advice.. Thanks abunch..I will go with rebuilding it... I started researching new Transfer Case's and I could hear my debit Card screaming from the back pocket...

I rebuilt my NP205 - really wasn't that hard. There are detailed instructions I could send to you.

Cost of the rebuild kit was around $200 if I remember right.

super easy build if you are so inclined! bearings and seals at oreillys are less than $300

that is if it is just your bearings and seals

Why not buy a good used one off the parts board? You could become a member and post a WTB ad - you might find one within driving distance or have it shipped to you as you were going to have to pay shipping to and from on your rebuild option.

Yeah. People never buy heavy items like transmissions, engines, etc. and have them shipped truck freight.

Last time I priced the fine spline adaptor sleeve for a automatic, it was over a $100.

For what its worth, I paid about $800 for a "new", fully rebuilt (all new internal parts), NP241 from Monster Transmission.

Good to know.. I'm having my buddy check it out to see what he can get it rebuild for and how far gone it truly is.. I appreciate all the help..I'll let you know what we decide..
