Exhaust ideas?

Speaking of exhaust~ when I got to the point of needing exhaust on my 67 Mustang, I called a wrecker and had it delivered to the local exhaust shop and 500 bucks later (plus shipping and handling!), I had my exhaust. To be honest, I thought it was kind of pricey, but it looks and sounds good.

On my truck, I'd like to be able to install the exhaust vs a shop if possible. It could be simple, dual exhaust, maybe exiting in front of the rear wheels? The hugger headers are 2" where the new pipe would be connected to it, kind of small now that I think about it. I was going to take the bolt on part and have the first parts bent and then clock the pipe, then tack weld them into place for starting the engine purposes. However, the pipe angle where it bolts onto the flange of the header puts the exiting exhaust at an angle, not straight down! kind of irritating~ are there kits available or is that way a pita?

Which leads me to ask, should I just have it towed again and have the exhaust made? Ideas welcomed of course~ ; )

I cannot find a decent pic of my header! You can see how the header "collector" points inward a tad.

Re: Exhaust ideas?

Exhaust is like a tattoo......good isn't cheap and cheap isn't good. Find a reputable shop that warranties their work, has some other nice cars on the racks and have it done. I hate trying to save some on exhaust and have one side lower than the other, too many bends and joints, welds not fully circled, hangers break because they didn't cradle them etc.

Re: Exhaust ideas?

Yea, what he said! If you have an exhaust shop you like and does good work, it's a good thing. There are lots of shops that do sloppy work and cut corners if they think you're unsuspecting or don't pay attention. You find a guy that cares and has pride in his work, keep him in your card file. That being said, I do most of my own because I'm crazy picky and I get satisfaction out of things like having the mufflers completely symmetrical, etc. If you are a welder and have a few fab skills, you can do your own using mandrel bends from the hot rod shop or E bay. All of this current project was done with a 110V mig, 4 1/2" grinder, disc sander and a band saw.....and lots of masking tape, s sharpie + a fair amount of scrap that started out as perfectly good pipe, but I got what I wanted!

Re: Exhaust ideas?

Thanks. If I had with tubing and a bender that would have made it fit like it does for $500 I probably would have jumped at it. I'm proud of it but the agrivation was intense at times and I have a HOIST!

Re: Exhaust ideas?

It appears as though you are using the "block hugger" type of header. Nothing wrong with that, they are usually used on Rods where space and routing are issues. Sometimes, places like Pypes have pre-made mandrel bent systems. These are mainly for Muscle Cars. They are not cheap though. Since you are in Houston, I would think there is a good exhaust shop that can do it. I found a guy Local to me that does good work. I plan on using him for my six. Sometimes you might be able to use the back of the Patricks set up and have someone fab the head pipe to the muffler.
I would encourage you to use an X pipe in your system.
Sorry kinda wordy today.

Re: Exhaust ideas?

I bought a box of bends from Speedway and made my exhaust.
some welded seams and some slip joint with a clamp.

Re: Exhaust ideas?

I have clipster headers from patriot headers, they come down at a 45 degree angle. Bought a build your own kit from summit racing, so far so good!

Re: Exhaust ideas?

most exhaust shops crush bend the tubing, mandrel bent is the way to go.
crush bending reduces the diameter of the tubing half inch minimum and really destroys the flow of the tubing.
crush vs mandrel:

for truk i bought a box of bends and straight pipe and welded my own system up.
a mandrel bent system in our shop would cost $1200 minimum, i think i paid $200 for my whole system
and it's very basic, dumps in front of the axle, though i did buy enough to go over the axle

we also make custom turbo and header installs. since we can only bend 2.5 and 3'' tubing we buy the bends

set of headers i made for a 69 mustang new dynacorn body

2010 turbo fusion

Re: Exhaust ideas?

Gee, I can't imagine making a set of headers! That's incredible Ogre!
Crossfires system looks nice and doable(for me).
Lazypineapples~ that looks like it bolts up to headers like mine!

My headers were cheap; off of ebay. I looked and looked for headers, even posted a thread about what headers to use, but didn't get a response, it is a personal thing. I was worried that when I bolt the crossmember back in(the one I cut out), that I may be limited on which headers to buy. I didn't want to buy headers only to have to send them back. I even went back and forth on cast iron stock manifolds, but I like the looks of headers. These hugger header do allow a lot of room to get to the starter, but I don't like that they are so close to the block (huggers!). Seems like it would cook the engine.

I've got a little time~I'd just like to say I did it myself even though the muffler shop can do it better and for less money. I just hate paying a wrecker to haul it to his shop! The last guy charged me 65 bucks each way(less than a mile), I'm just a little tighter now~ I'm starting to squeak! lol
I figured I would put the exhaust up one piece at a time, tack weld it in places, then do the other side, tack weld it. Then take the system back down and weld all the joints. I can weld pretty well, especially on new exhaust metal. I gotta fix dinner, be back.; )

This from speedway could get me started!

i use that same speedway down pipe kit and their Exhaust Bend kit.
more than enough pipe to do an exhaust systems.
all slip joints little bit of welding

Re: Exhaust ideas?

the summit kits are mandrel bent, good choice. it takes a little patience to get the angles right sometimes.
our trucks are very basic, no routing thru the frame or zigzagging around stuff.
saved a bunch of money by diy exhaust

crossfires system might look a little low, but remember that the lowest thing on our trucks are the rocker panels
the front of mine looks a lot like crossfires, as long as you stay above the rockers your good

Ogre
Do you get a lot of noise/rumble in the cab having the exhaust end in front of the axle?

Re: Exhaust ideas?

kim: define ''a lot''
truk makes a lot of noise, i get a drone when i shift into overdrive @ 45 up until a little over 50
i think part of that is dumping in front of the axle
i have summit mufflers that are supposed to be similar to flowmaster 40s
the exhaust guy at the shop says he can get my exhaust over the axle and around my tank
we're going to try it in the spring, he wants to do 304 ss all the way out the back, 304 is all we have at the shop.
i set up my exhaust in my barn before we got into exhaust systems

Thanks.
When i get to the exhaust I know mine is going to be tight. I'm going to do my best to get it past the axle.

Re: Exhaust ideas?

In trying to keep things as simpe as possible, is a crossover necessary? My 350 is stock, nothing special other than it's been rebuilt and looks pretty. Does it help the engine run better?

Re: Exhaust ideas?

I use a cross over or X pipe in all of my V8 builds. They seem to feel like they run smoother and it takes the harsh note out of the header/magna flow sound.

Make sure you use a good quality copper header gasket so you don't fight leaks with those ebay headers

When you tack the exhaust together, don't burn it in all at once at the same joint or it will pull or warp. Make smaller welds and come back to them. I'm sure ogre can elaborate after seeing his work and tight systems.

Re: Exhaust ideas?

If your a decent welder then build your own I build all the exhaust in my side venture ls1 swaps never had an issue and come out sweet I use the 2 1/2 kit from speedway motors.there's nothing wrong with cutting pipes and welding them together if done right and plus not to many shops that build exhausts using mandrel pipe
