Re: Differential questions
1) yes, if its coil rear. If not you will need to weld on new saddles. 2)Maybe. Break out some measuring. Tools. My rear was a little wider. My 1962 trailing arms are wider than the ladder frames. Had to weld saddle on out side the ones on my 12-bolt.

Re: Differential questions
If I recall, there is a small difference from the 68 and newer rear ends compared to the '67 and older. I pulled a rear from a 1971 C10 and Suburban with the intent of putting one of them in my '65. As stated, if it is coil spring, its a bolt in, no problem. If it is leaf spring, I don't know for sure. Come to find out, the 1971 truck and burb are about 1~1-1/2 inches wider on each side than the '65 rear.
You could get a 5x5 bolt pattern rear on the 1971 suburban, and I think it was 1972 for the C10, hope someone can confirm that. The Impala SS of era 1996'ish had 5x5 bolt pattern to. Then there is Ford 9" and for that you'd have to do some searching in this forum for that information.

Re: Differential questions
The 1970 12 bolt coule be either 62" wide or 63.5" wide, depending on whether it is a early model or later model '70. Either way it will have 6 lug axles unless someone has changed them. The good news is that it will bolt right in under your '65.
The '71 and up C10 truck 12 and 10 bolts were all 5x5 wheel bolt pattern and are 1.5" wider than the earlier differentials. Most of the '72 and earlier under Chevy's were for trailing arms, but most all '63-'72 GMC's had leaf springs.

Re: Differential questions
Thanks captainfab, my 1965 c10 230 three on the tree has a 4:10 under it and I use it as my daily driver but don't get to drive it on the interstate due to the RPM's that it turns. I found this 1970 3:08 at a good price, so before I pulled the trigger on it I wanted to know if it would fit. Thanks everyone!
Hey Captain why don't you make some early 6 cyl P/S brackets? Man talking about scarcer than hens teeth, I have been looking for a year for the OE brackets. Greg

Re: Differential questions
I have a 12 bolt from a 72 with 5X5 lug 3.08 gears I'm taking out of my truck for a ford 9" with disk brakes. I have this 72 under my 63 right now and bolted right in.

Re: Differential questions
If your '61 is a C10, then you have the Eaton HO32. More than likely you have the 3.90 gears that about 90% of them came with. There are no new aftermarket posi's made for these differentials that I know of. You will have to find a good original. These differentials were used from 2nd series '55 thru '62.

Re: Differential questions
Not sure if all the questions have been answered for this thread yet, but I remembered I asked some of the measurement questions sometime ago, and here is the linky: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=441037
Hope it helps.

Re: Differential questions
All truck 12 bolt parts are interchangeable. Have you checked to see if that '70 differential is the wide or narrow one? If it is the narrow one, why not just change the whole thing?

Re: Differential questions
Rustyspoke, the rear I have now will not allow the ralley wheels to fit, I'm sure you read that in my other thread. If I go with a backspace of 5 inches and 3 inches in the front, wheels will fit nicely and allow for a decent tire as well. However, the comparison from front to rear look will be awkward. Meaning it'll look like a front wheel drive setup, deep dish in front, thin lip in the rear. Unless I use the same wheel up front of course.
At this point, I'm going to a 9 inch rear end. I have a 9inch housing and pumpkin to rebuild already. Have no idea what it is out of and there were no brake components on it. Gear ratio is 2.75, non-posie, 28 spline axles. Not having the brakes isn't an issue, I'm leaning toward rear disks anyway. There are threads of swapping a 9inch in so that is where my research will be directed soon.

I've got a 1960 Chevy C10 with a bad rear-end. I'm on a major budget and was wondering if you could provide some insight as to what rear-ends are a direct replacement for mine? (I'm operating under the assumption that I can find a usable one in the salvage yard for less than I can have mine rebuilt) Any info you can provide would be great, thank you. |

Re: Differential questions
gbrown, I don't know which models would be a direct bolt in for your truck. Off the top of my head, I'd assume '60-'62/'63, but I'm not sure. Regarding your comment about rebuilding being more than another rear, this truly depends on what is wrong with your rear to begin with. If it is simply the seals and bearings, you're better off replacing those and moving on. If it has something to do with the a posi-unit or gear set, it would boil down to hoping the new unit is better than the one you're removing. Some of the cost can certainly be mitigated by you doing the work yourself and finding friends who have done rebuilds as well.

Re: Differential questions
Well I got the guy to measure and it is the wide rear end, I will have to decide weither to buy it and take the ring gear and pinion and carrier out and use them or keep looking.
Hey Captain did we confirm that a 1967--early 1970 with 6 lug axles is the correct one? Oh and do you know if the v8 auto's had a tall gear? thanks greg

Re: Differential questions
Ok, things are getting weird... my VIN says I've got a C10, but according to the pics of the rear diff and my LMC catalog, I'm thinking I've got a 3/4 ton rear. Can anyone help me ID it? Unfortunately, the truck is at my dad's house so I'm doing the best I can with pics, see below:

Re: Differential questions
Your C10 has the Eaton HO32 differential that was used from second series '55 thru '62 in the 1/2 tons. Those do look basically the same as the Eaton HO52/72 used in the C20's up thru '72.
If it is just the center section that is bad in your differential, you could try and find another good 3rd member and just change it, That would be the easiest and cheapest to get you back on the road. Alhtough you'll likely still be stuck with 3.90 gears, which aren't very highway friendly. The next step would be a '63-'64 12 bolt. Those will have the same panhard bar mount, but the trailing arm mounts are a little closer together. It is possible that threr is enough movement ion your trailing arms, to get them to bolt up. Otherwise, the trailing arm mounts will need to be cut off and welded back on at the correct distance and pinion angle. Then there is the '65 to early '70 12 bolts. The same situation with the trailing arm mounts. But these differentials use a shorter panhard bar. They can be used, but the panhard bar will need a slight bend in one end to be able to bolt it up to the frame bracket. Quote:

Re: Differential questions
The '65 to early '70 12 bolts are exactly the same, as in a direct swap. The '63-'64 12 bolt will bolt up except they are setup for the long panhard bar. The long panhard bar can work with a slight bend in the frame end.
If you are just talking about the internal parts, all truck 12 bolt parts from '63-'82 will interchange. The one thing that is different is in the '63 and '64 12 bolts, they used 17 spline axles and spider gears. '64 and up used 30 spline. The auto trans trucks could have 3.73's, 3.42's or 3.07's. Some of the later models came with 2.73's. Quote:
