Elusive Driveline 'Bind'
88 V20 Suburban
I’ve got an odd, relatively minor driveline ‘bind’ in the Suburban that I can’t seem to pinpoint. Usually only happens when taking off under a load and only lasts for a few seconds. Also happens when I get into a situation where I’m a little off-camber and turning. Just feels like something’s binding up a bit. Front and rear U-joints appear to be okay, front and rear wheel bearings seem to be okay as well. However, I did notice that my rear diff was about a quart and a half low and the fluid that was in it smelled a little on the burnt side. :/ Had one of the mechanics at work take a look and he couldn’t find anything obviously wrong with it. Naturally, when we took it for a drive, it wouldn’t do it. Any ideas? |

Do you have a clutch type limited slip in the rear end?

Re: Elusive Driveline 'Bind'
Yep. I did a little more research...I think it's the Gov-Lok. Changed the gear oil per the service bulletin and it got a little better, but it still does it now and again.
Any tips on how to thoroughly clean the rear without a complete dis-assembly? I was thinking maybe I could pull the diff cover and blast it all down with some brake cleaner. |

My 97 with posi does the exact same thing, I changed the fluid and put in the additive, made it better but still does it from time to time. Dunno if it's normal or not....

Re: Elusive Driveline 'Bind'
One piece or two piece drive shaft?
Sounds like it could be a "launch shudder". Occurs just as soon as you start rolling, gives you a couple "kicks" and then done? It would do this regardless of if you are going straight or turning, if this is the cause. It's a result of driveline angles not canceling out. Worse with load, like pulling a trailer or a bunch of stuff in the back. K

Re: Elusive Driveline 'Bind'
It’s a one-piece driveshaft. I only notice it if I’ve been driving for a while. It doesn’t act up on quick trips around town. The first time I really noticed it was on a trip to Washington. I was heading north on I-5 for about 300 miles at 65mph. I pulled off the highway to get some food, and when I turned the corner, it “popped” a few times until I straightened out.
