Original AM Radio Issue
My '72 GMC has the original AM radio which was working fine until it suddenly stopped working one day while I was driving. The fuse in the fuse box is fine and has power. I checked what I could on the wiring diagram I have. Does anyone happen to know if there was originally an in-line fuse on the AM radios? I can't see one under the dash. Seems strange that it suddenly stopped working as if a fuse went bad. As far as I know, the radios for 1972 were not a tube type. Any assistance is appreciated, especially if it can be identified without taking it out of the dash. Thanks.

Re: Original AM Radio Issue
When you say stopped working do you mean there is no power or just no sound? I would test to see if your getting power to the radio from the connection on the back of the radio.

Re: Original AM Radio Issue
Did you change or add speakers recently? These radios will burn out if you use anything but an 8 - 10 ohm speaker.
Does the light still work when you have the dash lights (park lights) on? Did the light work before the radio stopped working? Mine only has three wires. One is 12V fused from the fuse box, a ground and a speaker. I have never seen a factory harness with an in-line fuse for the radio. Check for power with a test light at the connector that plugs in the radio. Check the ground also. Hopefully your truck does not have AC. It makes it a lot harder to get too. Good Luck |

The problem might be the speaker instead of the radio. That's what happened to mine... Radio was fine. LockDoc
