Fuel Tank Question

I have a plastic ~30 gal fuel tank that came with the truck that I'd like to re-use. It's in decent shape and is clean (verified by looking at the gas we poured out of it).

We've mounted it between the frame rails already but I'm confused has to how a filler neck is supposed to attach to it.

The original building used a 2" to 1-3/4" adapter hose to connect the filler neck to the tank. It leaked badly. It also appears cut at an angle for some odd reason. There wasn't a clearance issue the way it was set up.

Are filler necks supposed to fit inside the hole in the tank fitting? Are they to be the same diameter as the tank fitting? Am I missing parts with this tank?

This is all new to me, and the engineer in me says that there should be a thin wall tube that connects a filler hose to the tank, ensuring a leak-free fitting with the hose. The ID of thee hole in the tank is about 1.5".

Tank fill fitting sits on the side of the tank at about a 45 degree angle up in the rear left corner of the tank. I'm thinking flush mount cap, but I need to know what parts I should be looking for.

Thoughts?

Re: Fuel Tank Question

you'll need a rubber line to go between both necks. buy gas line don't use radiator hose or you will have leaks. looks like you could cut the filler neck off to have the same diameter size as the neck on the tank. if you need to turn and route to where you fill buy exhaust bends to fit and weld to where you need to get to.

that's what i did to get from the side fill on my tank to the gas door in my fender.

Re: Fuel Tank Question

I'm really not sure where I'll have the fill tube go. We'll have to set the bed on to see how much clearance we have between it and the frame. I think it could go just behind the left rear fender, which would make for an easy cut. Or, I could route it through the left fender, I suppose. Hmmmm, options!

Re: Fuel Tank Question

Take the metal filler neck to the exhaust shop and have them insert the end into a " bell" press to expand it to the O.D. of the tank neck. This way you have the same size to work with. Cut or modify the neck if needed, mount it and use metal exhaust bends if needed but connect the pieces with rubber fuel line at the same O.D.

Re: Fuel Tank Question

Considering the price of replacement filler necks that aren't rusty and nasty, I'll likely not re-use this one.
