64 C-10 rear axle help

My truck is a 1964, but I don't believe this is an original axle. I have not attempted to locate codes on the axle at this point. Any help would be appreciated.

I agree. That is a 8.5 10 bolt car differential from a Impala/Caprice or Chevelle/Monte Carlo. I see they used just regular bolts instead of U-bolts, which is not good. Also they have the drivers side backing plate on the passenger side. Does it have 5 x 5 or 5 x 4.75 wheel bolt pattern.

Its a work in progress, a lot of cobbled up messes that I have been trying to fix over the last year which has lead me to the rear axle.
P.S: you might check out your computer it's typing funny

Thanks for the info.....It is a 5 X 5 pattern, I noticed the straight bolts as well, its crazy all the short cuts people will use. What is the drivers side backing plate?

Next question: Which year axles are interchangeable with the 64?

Re: 64 C-10 rear axle help

There is a drivers side backing plate on the passenger side. I identified this from the e-brake cable coming out of the backing plate behind the axle tube.

The '63 and '64 12 bolts are a direct interchange. The '65 to early '70 12 bolts will work, but they are designed to use a shorter panhard bar, which is easily dealt with. The '71 and '72 12 bolts will also bolt in, and also use the shorter panhard bar, but they are 1.5" wider and also have the 5x5 wheel stud pattern. These are all references to differentials under C10's. The '73-'82 12 bolts and '80-'87 10 bolts can be used, but they require cutting, welding and a little fabrication to be installed under a '60-'66 truck. The '63-'70 differentials can be converted to the 5x5 wheel stud pattern with aftermarket conversion axles.
