Re: axle strengthening rods?

I think you mean ladder bars? Some now call them traction bars......

No, not stock.

Re: axle strengthening rods?

You should probably take a picture. Right now, I'm envisioning Ford radius rods.

Post Re: axle strengthening rods?

Are they under the axle or across the raer side of the axle. I have seen both. On 4 wheel drives they tend to run under the axle kinda like a gusset from the bottom of the differential to the axles. I think this is supposed to strengthen the axle. I think they were mostly for looks though.
On drag racing cars T/A Performance makes a rear diff cover that has caps to support the rear carrier bearing races and has a provision to add braces from the center to the outer axle housing. It really helped on stock suspension cars that were leaving hard. It kept the rear axle from flexing under launch and was more for strength than looks .

Re: axle strengthening rods?

Seen this done on F-body cars with the 7.5 inch 10 bolt. When the tires catch and try to move the vehicle forward, the axle tubes wouldn't stay straight with the housing which would cause the pinion gear to move away from the ring gear and the rear end would scatter.

Not usually a problem for vehicles on the street with stronger rear ends. In the case of the F-body, the rear is really too small for the weight of the car and the power of the engine. I have seen it done on very high power drag cars though.

Re: axle strengthening rods?

My 76 had them too, The owner of my local speed shop told me they were a cheap bolt on axle truss from the 70s. Kinda funny I was rear ended hard last year and my rear end was destroyed in the accident, the rod was the only thing holding my pass side axle tube to the pumpkin.
