64-66 hubcap: can clip ring be removed?

I thought I read somewhere that the ring installed inside the 64-66 clip style hubcaps can be removed and used for a the wheel nub installation. I know recently there was a thread on installing these rings by cutting one out of a dented up original and installing in a reproduced cap? Anyway I have a NOS 3/4 clip type cap like in the picture below that I appreciably borrowed from a search. Can the ring be carefully trimmed out and a useable lip still be present? Otherwise anyone happen to need a trade?

Right 7 5/8th inside of the steel insert but if the steel ring was removed or trimmed back to near the chrome outer edge it would be the correct 10 3/16ths inch width to fit over the wheel knubs. I have laid them side by side and they are outside identical and the same size just that the metal ring was installed inside for the clip style wheel mount. I hate to cut it up but it would be nos and undetectable once it was installed on the wheel.

I have removed the ring from this size hubcap before to put in a larger ring for 3/4 ton trucks but I would NOT do that to use these on a half ton NUB style wheel, I think it would fall off pretty easy, I dont feel theres enough material on the edge and it would be tough to roll the edge correctly to keep them on the wheel. The lip can be peeled back and then pull out the insert ring, in fact I did it to the caps on the K20 in my Avatar. Jon

Hi Jon, I was thinking the same thing but I thought if I left a 1/4 inch portion of the metal ring I might be able to bend a lip with it to add strength to that rolled edge. May not be worth it as I have two NOS chrome 1/2 t knub caps and this one NOS clip style so I should just keep looking for two more before I destroy this one. Thanks, Mark

I did that to my 3/4 ton cap (pull out the ring). I carefully bent the chrome cap open just enough to pull the ring out. I dont feel there is enough metal to bend back over far enough to get that 1/2 ton cap rolled edge for the nub style. I took mine out in order to install clips on a newer 88-98 8 lug rim. Its going to work, just have to finish the project.

I'll second everyone's responses. I cut the ring out of a 3/4 ton cap, leaving about 1/4 inch around the perimeter. I then used pliers to roll the extra metal down as is it is on the 1/2 ton caps. It fits pretty well over the nubs on my wheels, but I wouldn't trust it given that I can't keep the 1/2 ton ones from falling off occasionally.
