Just curious 6 cylinder stuff

I found a couple trucks with straight 6's in them with power steering. Whats a power steering set up off a 6 cylinder worth? I have not got these bought, I'm just curious I have not messed with any 6 cylinder stuff. Thanks for the help. Randy

Hey Randy, here's a thread where a set was sold for $100 you should buy those trucks, pull the power steering stuff out, stash it away and in a couple of years they might cost just as much as tow hooks

If I can jump on this thread, what is an HEI for a 250 worth, and is it a direct replacement for the 292 also? (as in the 250 and 292 distributors the same?)

Andy, that Hei should fit both 250 and 292 according to this thread here, there's a price for them in there also. Paul.

Put me on the list if they are reasonabley priced. Or at least give me a clue which vehicles are more likely to have them.

I need the brackets to mount the power steering pump on a 292. I guess I also need the double groove pulley for the water pump. Not sure, but I think the bracketts may be different than the 250. Did all of the 250's have the integral or combined intake and exhaust? The 292 does not and I think that is the distinction that makes the brackets slightly different. I have the rest of the parts - pump and steering gear box but I took them off of a truck with an 8 and as a result the pump bracket is not the right one.

As to the value of HEI for an inline, I bought one from a fellow here this summer for $45 Canadian. He pulled it from a junkyard vehicle and called me as I had advertised on a local BB asking for one. I have yet to try it but it appears to be intact and is complete with the coil etc. I need to buy some plug wires and a new cap etc so I can try it out. Depending on exchange rates, $45 Canadian would equate to about $30 - $35 US.

I have a 6 cyl HEI distributor (no module) for $40.00. Last week, I sold my 6cyl P.S. stuff for $100.00. The Power steering stuff gets snapped up by guys with later model integral head designs, because when these heads fail (often), they are replaced with the older style. Therefore, they need the older style brackets to run their P.S..

From my understanding, the p/s brackets are kinda hard to come by. You might want to check on the "Parts Wanted" board at www.inliners.org I remember some of the guys talking about it. I don't think the HEI setups are uncommon. A HEI dizzy from a 230, 250, and 292 should all be interchangeable. I think the only difference is the coil in cap version not working well with an A/C setup.

Also, not all 250s had the integral head. It was a smog thing that started in early to mid '70s I believe. From what I've heard they really suck, and are very prone to cracking. Hope this helps some. John.

The integrated manifolds came in about '75/'76 I think. Earlier heads will bolt up. Brackets from L6s are getting harder to come by lately.
