Question HEI swap-in question...

Hey all! I'm tracking down parts for my 68 (see: "Troubleshooting...") and it turns out my old man has an HEI distributor from a 1988 Chevy Caprice cop car.

He says the unit is different than your "standard" Chevy HEI in that the cap is much smaller than normal (like, about the same size or even smaller than a points cap). It appears, however, that it would swap in nicely.

Whazzit? External coil? Some kinda special HAL computer-controlled beast? Anyone have any experience with these?
