Underhood Retractable Light
Was there an option for a underhood retractable light from the factory in a 1968 GMC? I am just curious because the truck my son and I just bought has one and it looks different than any I have seen the actual light is similar to the reverse light on the stepside trucks. I will post a picture of this light when I get home this evening.

I was going to say I think it was my 94 that had one on it, was real nice in the dark if you needed some light.

Re: Underhood Retractable Light
etindoll..i have the same light that you have ,i took it out of and old olds. many years ago. possible a 68 model or mat be a 70 model. it was a trunk light that has a mercury switch, and i rewired and put it under the hood with a toggle switch to turn it off and on....the wire will come out and the wir will come back in by turning the light ass.

Re: Underhood Retractable Light
I knew you guys would know. It has an alligator clip to hook it to the battery but wouldn't you know it will not reach. I am going to rewire it and put a swith on it. If it works as I hope it does.

Re: Underhood Retractable Light
the hole in the fender just to the side of the light your pic showed is a great place to put the toggle switch...

Re: Underhood Retractable Light
I have that same light, too, or one very similar. I don't have a picture of it handy, but the base looks the same, but IIRC, the light on mine is a little different. Without going out to the shop and looking, I want to say that my light has a red side and a clear side. It was my dad's and he moved it from truck to truck when I was growing up.

Re: Underhood Retractable Light
I dug out that light I have and took a few pictures:
Like I thought, it has a red side and a clear side, and the top, the cone or whatever, has like a magnifier, I guess to brighten and concentrate the beam: There is a mfgr-John W Hobbs Corp, but the city is too small to make out. I think it's Springfield, Mo I don't have a bulb handy, but I checked the circuit with my multi-meter and it should still work. It's still pretty clean inside-no rust or anything: I've always had a mind to restore it and use it
