Honorable rust bucket

Got this truck from Gerlach, NV. It helped build the far west no kinding. The nearest town is a hundred miles away, it s just an oasis in the middle of the biggest flattest surface on earth, the black rock desert where they use to hold the land speed record. The dust of this dried up lake bed is alkaline, it is a rust & electrical nightmare. And there is this truck 46 years later, still standing. So the bed is rusted, the doors corners are rusted, the bottom of the panels are rusted... & you don t want to look at the undercarriage...

The original color is light green (503?) & it looks real good (the color, not the condition) inside. On the outside the patina goes green grayish now & that s the way I d like to keep it. It is a workman s truck with a lot of history & it is more important to show here than to try to make it shiny - patching the holes would be an useless ordeal anyway).

So my question is, how do I get rid of the rust patches without damaging the paint pattern too much? I tried a rust remover wheel, that makes some spots. I am thinking clear coat.

Search CLR in the forum. There are a few threads about it. I've used it and it works good. Much better than taking a sander or anything really abrasive to it. It turns the rust patina into a "sun/weathered" patina.

I've heard of quite a few people using clear coat. I guess for the car I'm messing with now I was going to try Sharkhide metal protectant. Just a wipe on deal. Sounds like it will be easier and less maintenance.

This board is a great place to do research and feel out ideas. Keep us posted.
