Steering Wheel Install

I just finished replacing the turn signal switch and canceling cam in my 78. I put the steering wheel and horn button assembly back on but the horn does not work not. I can make it blow by touching the horn button and steering wheel with a screwdriver. I looks like the horn button is not sticking up thru the steering wheel mount far enough. As you can see from the pic I can also see the locking plate through the side of the steering wheel. Should I be able to see it? I think I have something on wrong / backward but an not sure. What do you think?

I followed a link off your post, it had a good pic of the horn contact - that button sticks out further than mine. Will look mine again tomorrow morning.

I stopped and looked at the canceling cam and the horn contact this morning. They do not stick far enough through the steering wheel hub to make contact with the flat spring washer.

The horn contact has "J" shaped slot in the side if it, which currently has the horn contact held close to the top of the post on the canceling cam. Am I supposed to turn the contact a bit so that it can spring up?

Sure wish I had taken a pic of this when I took it apart at Christmas

It just looks like you are missing a piece or put them in wrong. you should have a spring, the little black retainer that fits into the 'J slot', and the little rod that sticks through the steering wheel. IIRC you need to put the spring in first, slide the 'rod' all the way through the black retainer, and place the flat part on top of the spring. Is that how it is assembled? I can't tell with your pics.

Bohmankid: That is exactly what I have. The black piece with little "nub" that slides into the "J" - does it have to be turned to lock into the bottom of the "J" slot? Or just slide in and not turned so that the spring can push the shaft up and down?

first goes the spring in the horn/turn signal cancel cam, then the pin and hold down ring/bushing. Then you install the bellville washer dome up so when you push horn it springs down and makes contact to pin. Then the cup/plastic retainer piece and 3 screws, then your horn cap.

Little tip....if you tighten those 3 bolts that hold the cup too tight, it wont allow the bellive washer to have any spring to it....so you may have to adjust/loosen/tighten them accordingly

Yes it goes into the bottom of the 'J slot'. Just as 88Jimmy4x4 shows in his first picture, they go in that order. I've seen a few of my friends install the pin upside down or reversed. It's like a puzzle, play with it until you get it right

I was confused at first too but once looking at it and how it functioned (spring keeps pin from making contact till pushed down) it all made sense .
Also I think they sell the pin/spring in help section at autozone or any auto parts store but you have to cut the pin to length you need, think the kit is about $5

OK, 4 pictures below. 2 with the pin in a "short" position and 2 more with the pin in a "long" position. Which is correct? Or neither and I have the wrong part? The canceling cam I have is the Dorman #83232, which according to the specs should fit my tilt wheel K30.

In the short position the metal pin does not stick through the steering wheel hub far enough to ever touch the belleville washer. In the long position it would touch the belleville washer all the time.

When installed, should the metal pin be touching the bellville washer normally, or only when the horn button is pushed?

The last two pictures are correct, the top two pics are incorrect, if its too long cut it off...they sell them too long so you cut to fit as needed per application. I think mine was 5/8" long but just cut/file off a little at a time till you get it right.

the spring makes it stand out of the cancel cam in order to
touch the concave metal piece when you depress the horn cap

Thank you! Now I will be able to get the steering wheel back on tomorrow night. I learned a couple things too, and that is always good. I took it apart so many times i can now take off a locking ring with my eyes closed.

side note....I have all the factory manuals, service and overhaul and none show how these pieces go together

I think what surprised me the most was the way it was put together in the package is not the way it was installed. Got lucky, I did not have to trim the metal pin.
