Installing new door mechanism - help!
Hello friends, I am trying to remove the door handle mechanism (the thing that the inside door handle attaches to and connects to the actual door latch to open and close the door). See attached picture. The long lever attaches to the door latch is connected via a large headed rivet of some sort. How the heck do I remove this to install the new mechanism? Do I need to take a torch to this thing? Someone please give me some advice!
Regards, Mark |

Re: Installing new door mechanism - help!
you could drill it out or take your grinder and grind the head off and punch it out...

Re: Installing new door mechanism - help!
Is that a AD or TF? I went out and looked at my TF, the "bolt" part is oblong as is the rod hole. It is set up so you rotate it 90 degrees and it lifts off.
If yours is round you can use a die grinder to remove it and a fine thread nut and thin self locking nut. If the bolt head interfers with the door panel, just grind it thinner.

Thanks Patrick and the rest of you. Mine is a 58 TF and yes, unfortunately I have a round head to deal with. I guess I will grind it off and proceed....Thanks again!

Re: Installing new door mechanism - help!
Can you get the latch out of the door so you can lay it on the bench and see if you can do something with the back side of the pin to remove it without damaging the front?
Then you could possibly reuse the pin if you need to.

Re: Installing new door mechanism - help!
if the arm has the oblong slot you might be able to cut the rivet head to come off the latch
every tf latch i've seen has had the oblong rivet and matching slot not the best picture but it shows the oblong rivet

Re: Installing new door mechanism - help!
From the marks on the arm it looks like you may be able to do that as it shows there is some movement of the pin in the arm. You want to make the flats at close to a 90 fro m the direction the arm normally moves .
Just a thought though, if the latch is shot it doesn't really make much difference how you take the arm off as long as you don't damage the arm unless you need to save the pin for the new latch. |

Re: Installing new door mechanism - help!
I just looked at my new latches and they have the oblong pin head, so if you are replacing them cut off the old latch head and use a file or dremel to make the hole in the old arm match the new oblong.
