Tilt Steering Column Parts
Does anyone know what the part numbers are for all the bearings for tilt columns?
I find it difficult to pay $30 for one bearing that I know I can get for $5-$10 from a bearing company like IBT. Thanks for any help! |

Re: Tilt Steering Column Parts
I'm assuming your looking for the GM p/n. If so, here's the bottom bearing that generally needs to be replaced 7809271.

Re: Tilt Steering Column Parts
I did mine a year ago, and at that time few bearings were available. Got mine from Wes, he found one in south america....
For safety sake, i would use oem parts. Ive looked on my old bearings, and there arent any numbers etched in them....

Re: Tilt Steering Column Parts
So I found a parts list reference with the GM part numbers on it for a tilt column.
Upper and lower bearings contained in the tilt housing, 5698407 (upper) and 5696210 (lower). And I agree with Daves input that the lower shift tube bearing is 7809271. Now the question is, who can cross reference these to a Timken (or similar) bearing number?? |

Re: Tilt Steering Column Parts
Get the dimensions- OD X ID X Width- a decent bearing supply house should find an equivalent. Take 'em down to get matched up, if necessary.

Re: Tilt Steering Column Parts
Good idea. I sent an email out this morning to a guy I know that runs a bearing company and he said to send him the 3 bearings and he'd try to match them up.
He had no luck converting the obsolete GM part numbers into a current part number. |

Re: Tilt Steering Column Parts
I've replaced bearings in many machines, boat motors, trailers, stuff like that. I just take the old bearings in to napa, they measure them and give me a new one. So far they have had every bearing I took in. You might want to make friends with the guy behind the counter!

Re: Tilt Steering Column Parts
Hopefully I'll get some part numbers back for current production bearings and post them on here so everyone can benefit from the findings. After all, that's what makes this website and this hobby great, because we can all learn from each other.
