Scrap value of motor and trans?
250 inline 6 and sm465 4 speed granny trans. Ran fine when pulled, can't get the $50 opening bid on ebay. What is this worth for scrap? Thanks...

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
$40? What's scrap per ton where you are at? That combo is probably about 600 pounds...

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
SM465 are popular in Jeep builds, I would put it (tranny only) on Craigslist locally for $100. It wont cost you anything to try.

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
That distributor is worth the money alone. I've sold several inline 6 HEIs for more than that. Some of them right here on the parts board.

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
Craigslist seems to sell more things than eBay. The eBay craze has waned since they and PayPal started getting ever greedier

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
Try splitting them and putting them on Craigslist. I have found that people are more willing to buy if they think they can barter the price. Ebay has almost totally outgrown its usefulness in my opinion.

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
I agree... Separate the engine/ trans. Market the tranny to jeep guys and the sixer to the ratrod guys....

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
Two different groups. Wheelers want the trans but not the six. Only hard core nuts like me want sixes. Problem is, the motor's not worth shipping costs other than local.
Split and sell the trans. Depending on the yea of the six, parts may be worht something - HEI, script valve cover, late carb with electric choke, carb for integral head, etc. Check out ebay listings for parts and see what you think. But almost no L6 guys use that trans in a build anymore.

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
Yesterday I lowered the starting price on my ebay auction to 1 penny... No reserve... Still no bidders!

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
People arent going to buy that on ebay. Nobody is going to pay shipping and hardly anyone says pickup only. Craigslist is the place to sell. If you were local to me, Id buy it.

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
Sleazebay is a horrible way to sell something like a motor/trans.

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
eBay is all about timing. It’s a matter of getting the right buyer looking for your stuff at the right time. Maybe nobody needed it last week, but this week there might be ten people that need it. I had a super-nice factory burlwood dash bezel listed for $50 last week, but ended up with no bids/watchers and only 3 looks. Auction ended last night, so I relisted it this morning. Eventually, someone is going to start looking for one, so I’ll just keep it out there until they do. It’s kinda like fishing…the fish want to eat, but you gotta wait long enough for them to find your bait. Just keep relisting it. Someone will bite.
IMO, because of its regional limitations, Craig’s List is good for high-demand items that the general masses want - furniture, bicycles, complete vehicles…crap like that. But for specialty items – like specific trim pieces, or a not-so-common engine – you may be better off with eBay because of its expanded “audience”. I know when I’m looking for a hard to find or uncommon part, I go to eBay first. That being said, I wouldn’t think it would be too difficult to sell that trans on CL, but the sixer might be better off on eBay. Also, for heavy items, the shipping costs associated with eBay are a turn off for a lot of people. |

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
A 2wd SM465 can be converted but it's easier to find a 4wd 465. I've got one that I bought in a parts pile. I've tried to sell it a few times with no calls. List them separately on CL and renew it often, you'll find your guy.

Re: Scrap value of motor and trans?
I stopped by the dealer a couple of weeks back and priced the thermostat tower for the tune of $84. Plus gaskets. He also metioned that the history of parts in general go up about 2% per quarter. Wish my wages did, but then again my name isn't GM.
