i got these tow hooks off a 72 k20 frame that was trashed. i wanna use them on my 71 k20 but the holes on the hooks dont line up with the two holes on my 71 frame. are these hooks factory? did they use diffrent hooks through the years?

Re: tow hook info

Those were used in 1972 only. They sell for about $100 more that the 69-72 style hooks. The bolt holes on the two styles are the same so you will have to drill either way.
The "extreme bend" tow hooks started sometime in 1972. The 69-72 style was used a little ways in the 72 production run.
I doubt anyone would notice if you use that style, and if they did it wouldn't matter.

Edit: check out this thread. It has 69-72 style hooks pictured, but also mentions the 72 style mounts differently than the 69-72 style. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=305926

Re: tow hook info

Those are 1972 specific tow hooks the "extreme bend" hooks - a one year only deal. These bend in the same direction (i.e, one sided). The correct hooks for a 71 are the 69-72 type: these bend in opposing directions (i.e., there is a RH and a LH hook). In at least 72 the 4wd frames were all drilled for hooks by GM whether or not the truck was so equipped. I have a spare set of 69-72 hooks to trade!

Re: tow hook info

are they worth so much more just because they are 72 only? i think ones going away from each other would look better.

Re: tow hook info

I believe the 72's command more $$ because they are a one year off option and supply is limited. Some guys do prefer the more balanced look of the 69-72 hooks: I have a set of 69-72 on my K10 now for that reason but will put the 72 only style on my K20 resto.

Here are some comparison pics I saved that were posted by a board member in a thread I wasn't able to find on a quick search so can't give credit where do.

Re: tow hook info

71 frames were not drilled unless hooks were ordered, I added hooks to my 71 and had to drill the holes

Re: tow hook info

Wow really glad I found this. I happen to have a set of 72 only hooks I snatched off a beat up Jimmy and was saving them for a worthy truck. I have a 72 K10 but I'm not sure the holes lined up good for them.

Re: tow hook info

Hello. found this thread to be quite interesting. I have a pair of 67-68 tow hooks (based on Deadhead NM's tow hook layout). I have yet to install them on my '72 K 1/2 ton Suburban. Opon initial inspection it does'nt look like they want to fit my frame. My frame came with the tow hook holes predrilled. The tow hook holes do line up with my frame but it seems like the bumper is slightly in the way. Should these tow hooks fit my truck ? If not would someone want to do a trade for the other style. Mine have the extreme curl where the two holes are located. It seems like the other ones that have a straighter neck (where mounting holes are) would fit.
Any thoughts.
Thanks,

J

Re: tow hook info

jaywashburn, no they won't fit without modification. The ones you have actually started in 60 and went to 68 i believe.
