Lock cylinder removal ?

Can someone help with removing the ignition lock cylinder on my 71 . I bought a replacement one because mine is sticky if you don't get the key just right it won't turn, I thought I knew how to remove it but I was wrong.

Re: Lock cylinder removal ?

Put a paperclip in the hole on the cylinder, then push it in and turn counterclock wise with the key, then pull the cylinder out. It may take a few times. Just keep trying and you may have to push the paperclip a little harder to get it to work.

Re: Lock cylinder removal ?

If I may add to ldg72chevy's advice:

This is what it looks like inside with the cylinder removed. You are trying to release the cylinder by depressing the small brass button you see just below the "O" in ON with your wire. This pic is from a 67 Vette but your truck is the same design. You usually have to fiddle with it a while until you find the right technique. A stiff wire or tool with a flat end helps. Good luck.

You have to turn the ignition cylinder to the left as far as it will go before you put the paper clip or stiff wire into the hole. You DO NOT have to push hard on the paper clip or wire. Here are the instructions:

-
Turn the key to the left as far as it will go and insert a straightened paper clip or stiff wire into the hole in the face of the cylinder and “gently” push the spring loaded pin in. Turn the cylinder further to the left to remove it.

After you push the spring loaded pin in with the stiff wire and turn the cylinder further to the left you have to pull the wire out to finish turning it or it will bind. You can also turn it too far after you pull the wire out. That is when you have to wiggle the cylinder back and forth a little bit. If you wiggle it too much the pin will pop back out and you will have to start over. You should not have to put excessive turning pressure on it or push down hard on the spring loaded pin. Gentle and patience are the key words here...

Re: Lock cylinder removal ?

The things that seem the simplest can often be the most difficult.

Ok, I can find the pin and depress it in the left ACC position. But beyond this the cylinder will not budge. HELP!

With it as u described, turn slightly more to left as you wiggle the assy(using key to jiggle with)and pull out at the same time. When just right, assy will turn slightly more left and slide out at same time. No force needed; just jiggle and wiggle motions with pin pushed all the way in.

Re: Lock cylinder removal ?

Thanks Scott and luvbowties, The entire set up is turning. I seen to find a way to hold the inside piece while turning the key left with the pin depressed. Suffice to say, I need a third hand!

Re: Lock cylinder removal ?

you know I 've done this a bunch of times(3 times yesterday as a matter of fact) and still it takes me a while sometimes.
i like too use a small vice grips on the key for extra leverage to help turn counterclockwise you just gotta use your best jugdment not too twist the key.
i just dont have the ability to be able too turn it with out them(because of other reasons)but alot of the ones i did were tough too turn when getting them out I've had very few that turned back and pulled out without alot of effort.

Re: Lock cylinder removal ?

i did mine a couple of times yesterday. 1st time was the easiest. once you know the feel of the brass button then you know you are close. my key is so worn that it pulls out of the lock in any position very easily. what i did was...

spray the heck out of it with WD40.
insert key and turn to the left to line up button
used small allen wrench to push button and turn a little more to the left
key pulled out without clyinder to i used the hooked end of the allen wrench to pull the cylinder out.

I did it three times, 1st time was cake second took several attemps. I didnt want it to kick my butt so i did it a third time and it was just a little longer than the first time.

Hope that helps, John

Ok, I finally got it out! With the help of a third hand, the wiggle technique worked! Thanks guys! Photos later when the weather breaks!
