Re: Vinyl Roof ?

It was a spray on rubber/vinyl product that mimicked a vinyl roof. It was cheap, durable and gave a look people wanted. Most every vehicle I remember seeing this on was a car and the last was a buddy's newly purchased 65 Dodge in 96.
Most often these were done at the dealer or aftermarket level and many installations have tape lines under the top coat to look like seams. The only factory truck installations I can remember were the Dodge "Dude" package trucks.

never seen one before in person but there's a great thread from a few years back that details what the other post said with some great examples. Can't remember if there were any pics though

Re: Vinyl Roof ?

I remember them. I had a buddy with a 63 Impala coupe that had a spray on top. Poor man's vinyl top. Looked pretty good and seemed very durable.

Re: Vinyl Roof ?

Thanks to all that replied ! I like to throw out a topic a little different then usual ? I wanted to know if anyone actually ever owned a pickup that had it done ? I remember seeing cars with it done, but never a pickup. I grew up in Florida and a real vinyl top would last about a year before the sun baked it to death ! The fake carriage tops fared even worse.....Thanks again, love you guy's...

Re: Vinyl Roof ?

Well JoesJunk has owned his 23 years and a car I saw was still nice 31 years later and it spent 8 years in the desert sun that I know of. Like I said before they were durable. Not too sure you can find the same quality material now if you wanted to add it to a truck. Even then you had the dealer/aftermaker pro materials at one end and the tape/spray can kits from JC Whitney at the other. But a quality bedliner material might give a good effect. Are you thinking about masking a rust issue or something?

Re: Vinyl Roof ?

The life of a vinyl top in Florida had a lot to do with many things, Mfg, where you parked it, and if it was cared for by owner or not ! I worked in Auto Sales for 30 years in the Tampa area, when "Vinyl" Tops where the big thing many where installed by aftermarket "Top" shops. Unlike factory installed vinyl tops these utilized inferior grade material and soon began to delaminates and fade out bad. Rust also was a big problem around the rear window. My brother had a 68 Charger that had big sale panels covered in black vinyl, sharp car ! Bad Rust !

Re: Vinyl Roof ?

Interesting. My opinion is twofold. If it is dealer installed and a survivor I like it. If it isn't vynil and mimics the blazer texture I think that might look okay too.

A long time ago I had a Dart with a white vinyl top with little flowers applied and a picture of a guy hanging ten on the front quarters. Long story short the vinyl had a tear and moisture got locked in there. For awhile I thought the vinyl was padded...but no the padding was rust flakes on a grand scale. I sold the car to my brother and he sawzall'd the top off. Solved the problem of having to replace the vinyl.
