How to take out bellhousing?

I'm replacing my tranny and clutch. How do I take it out?

Re: How to take out bellhousing?

What year is your truck? If you have the trans out already, there is between 4 and 6 bolts that hold the bellhousing on. The bolts at the top of the block can be a pain to get to. A nice ratchet type box end wrench is handy to get them out.

Re: How to take out bellhousing?

If it is a Chevy, anything from 1955 to 1998 V-8's will have six bolts. I have had good luck on pick-ups getting the top two bolts from under the hood. You will have to sit under the hood and but if you have limited tools, then you can do it that way with a normal 9/16 wrench.

There also may be a spring connected to the throw out bearing fork you will have to disconnect.

If the starter is bolted to the bellhousing, remove it from the bell housing before unbolting the bell housing from the engine. Make sure you disconnect the battery first.

Re: How to take out bellhousing?

jack up on the front engine balancer, not allot or go crazy, just enough to tilt it back so you can get them from below, if up top is to hard.

If the tranny was still on, it would do this for you, with its weight.

Re: How to take out bellhousing?

When I took out my 250 with a 4 speed I only remember 4 bolts. 2 on the "inside" and 2 on the upper backside. Yeah the ratcheting wrenches work real good. I accessed them from underneath.
