Can someone please tell me how to replace a 3 speed transmission and clutch?

I have a 69 GMC pickup and it needs the tranny replaced. I really need to know how. So if someone could post a step by step process thatd be very helpful! Thanks!

A good service manual breaks it down step by step. Haynes or Chilton...

You realy need a manual but i'll help you through it. Remove the drive shaft at the rear end & slide it out of the trans. It a good idea to drain the trans. unless you want a puddle of grease in your lap. Remove the clips that hold the shift rods to the trans. Tie the rods out of the way. Remove the pan under the clutch & remove the lower trans mount bolts. They go in from the front. Remove the upper trans bolts from the top of the trans. If you are a pretty stought fella or otherwise in good physical shape you can slide it out & put it on the ground. It weighs about 75 lbs. To remove the clutch, remove the bolts assesable & turn the engine & remove the bolts as they come down. Slide the clutch out the bottom. You may have to push the disc up into the houseing & pull the pressure plate out first.

reprints of GM factory service manuals are a great cheap investment and a good way to do things right the first time// they pay for thierselves with one job done correctly the first time

most vendors here have them cheap or you can surf ebay for a cheap one too

One more thing, many of these trucks have a two piece driveline. You may have a center"carrier bearing" that needs to be unbolted. You will also need to use and alignment tool to install the new clutch.

Yup... I figure if someone is asking for a major component to be removed, they need to have the right tools and literature to help do it right. It's not like we're pulling an alternator here. Don't even know if the OP has a jack or jack stands.

My advice would be to find a buddy or two that have some wrenchin' skills and ask them for help. I know everybody needs to learn sometime... but it's better with help on a major part like a transmission and bellhousing.
