Original 72 Door Panels?? Exterior Screw? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok so I got some original black door panels from a member and I mounted them. The PO drilled holes in the blue door panels that were originally on my truck in all four corners for stainless screws... I"m assuming the PO didn't want to get the plastic tabs.... Those panels which are also original w/ stainless trim/scrolls don't have the one exterior screw mount on the side that the black ones do.

So were the blue ones for a different year or for a different trim? Both panels are original so I don't understand. The black ones mount up perfect, tight and I don't see the need for the screw. But I'm thinking I might have to drill another hole in my door so I don't just have a blank hole in my door panel. Thoughts anyone??? I attached a pic of the black panel.

Well, 72 door panels are one year only. I have 4 sets of panels and they all have screw holes in different places. I used new push in retainers just a few months ago and they are already starting to pull out. I think that's why people drilled holes to screw them in. One set of panels I have has no holes and one set has what looks to be factory holes at the rear edge half way between the top and the bottom. I have no idea if they came from the factory with holes or not.

Most 72 panels I have seen have one screw/ferrule that is on the rear of the panel, in the middle. I have seen a few sets where there was a screw/ferrule at the bottom, and one at the top, as opposed to one in the middle.

Ok. Thanks guys. So do you think my door shells aren't 72 door shells? I have to drill a hole to mount the screw..

If you doors have a place for a screw under the vent window as seen below then your doors are 1972. The screw was another 1972 only feature.

Ok. Both doors have the vent window screw. So why wouldnt they have the screw for the door panel.... Weird

The two screws that are in the rear top and bottom corners of your panels are probably original, with the two in the front top and bottom corners being added by a PO.
