transmission question

hi everyone i have a 1978 chev 1 ton 4x4 and the 4 speed transmission when upshifting its fine but when downshifting its really hard to shift into 2nd gear on the shifter knob its say low first second third so maybe you can call its 1st not 2nd im not sure any help would be great thank you

My 4 spd on a 76 3/4 was the same. I used to know the ratio's but all I can remember now is it was geared low.. I rarely used 2nd when down shifting it was usually high gear to 3rd and brakes. I'd rather wear out brake linings than replace a clutch. Oh ya I punted and switched to a T350. My .02
