Truck broken into, need help replacing ignition
Instead of grabbing the keys laying on the bench seat the jack legs jammed a screw driver in the key hole and completely butchered my ignition. I can no longer insert the key in order to remove the lock using the "paper clip" hole. How do I go about getting everything out in order to replace it? It's a 72 K10 with factory setup.
Luckily I had the battery in the garage on the charger at the time. Any advice on going about this would be greatly appreciated. Pics are a godsend. |

Re: Truck broken into, need help replacing ignition
I had to do this too.
Drill a small pilot hole in the center of the ignition. Next use a bit as close to the size of the inner circle as you can get, and try not to wobble out to the outer section. Once you've got it drilled out, it should allow you to take it all apart. The metal was pretty soft in the center and mine came out without too much frustration. |

Re: Truck broken into, need help replacing ignition
I used a sawzall from the backside of the dash and just cut it off. You need a new one anyhow...

Re: Truck broken into, need help replacing ignition
I did it one time on a Chevy school bus, which was set-up the same way. Even though it was a lot newer, it was dash mounted.
I just unscrewed the bezel with a pair of vicegrips and forced it over the switch. It is just the thin sheetmetal cap over the keyhole that it has to get past.

Re: Truck broken into, need help replacing ignition
Thanks for all the input. I'm leaning in the direction of the sawsall method. Just cut it out from the back and go from there.

Re: Truck broken into, need help replacing ignition
FYI. If you drill out the center you can reuse the housing. They sell the keyed center part by itself. The sawzall method means you have to repurchase everything.

Re: Truck broken into, need help replacing ignition
Thank You everyone for the ideas. It's been a huge help! Unfortunately living 60 miles from the mexican border makes car theft a big problem. Especially for classic vehichles

Re: Truck broken into, need help replacing ignition
There are 2 small "snap clips" on the side. Those will need to be pushed in.
