Width of 71-72 rear end

Anyone remember the width of a 70 rear end versus the wider 71-72 rear end? I can't remember to save my life.

Re: Width of 71-72 rear end

They could be the same width.
The two I have are.
Some of the early '70 housings are the narrow 67-69 width.
I use a backing plate - to - backing plate width.
55-1/2" for the early rearend.
57" for the later rearend.

One of mine was a GMC leaf spring truck.
The other was a Chevy coil spring truck.
Who knows.

Re: Width of 71-72 rear end

In late 1970, Chevy knew they were going to change over to dsic brakes as standard equipment, so a few 70 models came equipped with disc brakes. Others were just equipped with wider axle housings. I'm assuming this was because they had already started producing them for the 71 model year pickups.

There's always oddities in "change-over" vehicles like that.

Re: Width of 71-72 rear end

I've never seen a documented disc brake 1970 truck anywhere.
Any Internet info out there that supports this?

Re: Width of 71-72 rear end

They're very rare. Most of the time, one would think it's been converted. There's a local lot in town that always has some classic vehicles. I usually don't stop becasue he's VERY high on his prices. I stopped in once, though to check out a nice, light blue 70 on the lot. I don't remember the exact package, but it was pretty loaded with discs, and 5-lug. It seemed to be in great unrestored original condition, so I asked if it had been converted to disc brakes. He said no, it was all original. I first thought he either didn't know what he had and was selling, but I looked at the SPID, and sure enough, it had disc brakes as an option. This is the only one I've ever seen, that I know for a fact had it from the factory.
