DIY grills
lets see some DIY grills. Im thinking of making something with some steel mesh of some kind. Not a fan of billets and the stock ones are stupid expensive for some cheap plastic.
I saw that one black truck at sema i think that looks like the grill is solid sheetmetal. I dont see how he gets air to the engine but it looks pretty cool. |

Re: DIY grills
My Dad bought a yellow 78 GMC heavy half ton back in 1980 that had a custom grill. I'm still digging for a good picture of it, but somebody had built the whole grill out of rebar and sprayed it black. They even made a GMC emblem in the center out of rebar. Sounds pretty aweful, but it was actually kinda cool (at least at the time). The truck is sitting at a friend's house now getting scrapped out (I drove it in the early 90's in high school until the original 350 died at around 400,000 miles), but sometime in the last 18 years since I had it somebody took the grill out. Wish I had that thing for a shop decoration now...

Re: DIY grills
Here's mine.. Expanded metal.
Whomever did it .. did it well, it's cut and fit perfectly to the outer grill. I suspect this truck was a California forestry truck, as it has a hole in the roof for a bubble light, and an actual siren still mounted to the inner wheel fender. It's a good guess they removed it and replaced it with the expanded metal so they could drive the truck in the brush without breaking the more fragile plastic inner grill.. J.

Re: DIY grills
I've been pondering the idear of putting polished rivets or something similar into my grill molding so that it would stand out but still be somewhat blacked out. Just an idea though

Re: DIY grills
Ever see the 69 Camaro "proto-type" C-10 grill. I don't have a photo but it looked sweet. Definitely something I would go for.

Re: DIY grills
Although I don't like altering the bodies on these trucks too much, I gotta say that that looks nice.
