say i was looking for a LS1 motor, would i just call a local salvage yard ask them what they have, then go over there and pull the engine from a car? do the salvage yards charge more for an engine, then say what someone on ebay would be charging for an engine?

the problem with salvage yards is you have no idea of the history of the unit you buy and a 30day warrenty isn't worth the effort to install !!!
with the price of brand new crates and their substantial warrentys it just seems to be a better way to go

GM sells LS1's brand new....but the cost is around $5k if i remember correctly.

The salvage yard would proably be the easiest because you wouldn't have to ship. Ask around and find a yard with a good reputaion in your area.

cdowns is right though....salvage yard engines can be a gamble. You have no clue what the engine has been throught....at least try to get one with pretty low miles on it

Since the onslaught of good quality, low cost crate engines, my philosophy has been that if I need a core to rebuild, the junkyard is fine. If I need it to run with minimal fuss, go the crate engine route. Of course, there are all sorts of modifiers here. If I can hear the engine run in the junkyard (rare) then that changes things a bit.

Only way I'd buy a wrecking yard engine is if I was planning on rebuilding it and even then, you want to make sure they will buy it back if its not rebuildable.

Some yards test run the engines and do comperssion tests and then grade them accordingly. Theres a place here in my city that does that. If the car is wrecked, chances are that the motor ran when it came in to the yard. If its not wrecked and in a wrecking yard, I wouldn't touch it.

Another thing to consider, alot of people that work at wrecking yards have buddies that they tell when the good stuff comes in.

So the engines on ebay that people pull out of cars arent any good? People sure do pay the money for engines on ebay. I really dont want to spend 5k+ on a new crate engine. I would rather get a low mile used engine for 3k. Now i dont know what to do...

in my opinion being a mechanic i would just either build one myself or get a crate engine to me its not the worth the hassle and not knowing if the previous owner drove like me and ran the sh!t outta the engine. i would rather start fresh and know the history its worth the money in my opinion

If you do the proper tests in a junk yard, and carry the right things to fire one up, i would not hesitate to do it in a pinch.
I've done this in the past on a few occasions, and have yet to get burned. Knock on woodgrain.
But it is a gamble though...but at $100...it is a cheap gamble. (local yard sells 'old school v-8 engines for 100 bucks, yoy pull it)

Got one of those yards here too. $135 gets you the whole engine, or $100 for just a long block. You pull. The good stuff is always gone before I get there, though.

I would go for a new engine. I owned an '01 Camaro with an LS-1 and a six speed. It was my wife's car but I beat the living crap out of it every chance I got. I would imagine most people do the same thing. That's why they buy a car like that in the first place. Spend a couple grand more and get a new one.

lt1s amd ls1s are computer intensive...If you get a wrecked camaro...there seams to be quite a few..you can take all of the electronics...seats..tranny..disc brakes..etc. A friend of mine boufgt one for 800.00...a friend needed some parts so they split the costs...worke out great for them

ive had 1 experience with yard engines. my sisters 2.2 dodge daytona. 90 day warranty $450 i put the engine in this spring. right now the car is in my garage with a cracked head. dilema now is the car isnt worth another 450 but a head is 350 alone. ahhhhhhhh

Yea, there is a yard around here that will pull the motor for you, and if you get it in and it dont work they will either buy it back or they will pull the non working motor out your vehicle, and drop a working one in for you.
