we put a new front clip on my little brothers 87 2wd this weekend. hes cheap so he bought "international harvester" red tractor paint $25 for a gallon.
to make a long terrible story short we painted it in the dark, with paint brushes, with paint that was spilled on the dirty garage floor<hes clumsy and spilled the gallon of paint 2 times>
in the morning when he bought it outside it has runs on the runs there are bare spots and spots where the paint is 1/4 in thick

hes going to come down this weekend so we can try to fix it

Your kidding ....aren't you? I have seen trucks that I swore were painted with a dirty mop. I never knew someone that actually did it though....:p

he lives about 100 miles away and dosent have anyone to help him up there and he has no money. were going to sand the runs down this weekend then try to repaint it in my garage where i have lights and stuff. anyone have any good painting tips or suggestions other than not to use a brush. will a wagner power sprayer work good?

I don't think I would have told anyone about doing something like that. Some things are better kept to yourself, you know? This might be one of them.

yes, a wagner will work. i have painted more than one car like that. and yes, quite a few of them were with house paint. derby cars dont need expensive auto paint. the wagner does give pretty good results.

oh my gosh this thread is FUNNY! My dad used a rattle can on a hood, fender, and door. 3 years later it still looks good though. The new owner finished the truck that way.

yeah, go with the Wagner. The rattle can works okay, but the spray nozel isn't so good a getting a wide even coat. If you're going to sand down to the metal I'd recommend a primer, but it sounds like you're just trying to get a covering. Also, when you spray in your garage you might want to cover or remove anything in the garage you don't want red. Spray paints tend to drift in the air, and get some masks.
