I too would like to know the principles on how they work and how to tell if you already have one.

Well heres my explaination of a stall converter.
First most converters are for 1600-1800 RPM. This means that you can hold the brakes and get on the gas up to near that RPM without the tires starting to spin. For a 2500 RPM stall, You can bring the RPMs up to the stall of 2500 RPM, a 3500 Stall = 3500 RPM. The idea is that this allows you to get your engine up into it's power band RPM range before the tires start to get power. A engine with a large cam needs a higher stall to get it into the power range, thus making your launch quicker. The old timer's trick was to use a Vega Converter because it was for a 4 cyc. engine and it had a higher stall than a v-8 converter. Hope that helps! |
