Missing V.I.N
I recently bought a 71 Chevy half ton. My problem is that there is no V.I.N on the pillar. Can I still get it registered? I have a title but the previous owner said it has not been driven on the road in a few (several) years. Should I get a new cab, the current one does have a little rust. I was told I could put a different vin on, but is that completely legal?
It's a 4spd 4x4 with a non matching 350.

VIN plates are on the LH rear cab pillar where your door opens. There is not VIN on the dash under the windshield on 67-72 trucks if that's what you're referring to.

If the VIN is missing from your drivers side door pillar, all you have to do is call the state police and they will come out, verify the VIN that's on the frame of your vehicle, and provide a replacement VIN tag at no charge.

Tom,
Yeah, it may not always be the State Police. But I don't imagine that the rest of the information would be that much different. After all, there has to be SOME way of re-tagging a vehicle that loses one. Brian |
