epoxy primer question

hey guys, I have my truck down to the frame now, and am ready to paint the frame.
I got a cheap spray gun kit from TCP global, and will be using Kirker epoxy primer... Can I paint the frame with just the primer and leave it, or do I need to apply regular paint over the primer?

I just did mine in ppg dp90 ..Its a epoxy primer made for what your doing. It works great for the body and frame and underbody, i had mine done but should be easy to do yourself keep in mind that 2 lighter coats may be better than 1 heavy one. That is the problem that I see most is people put it on too heavy, or don't have a gun that can atomize it well. You can also add 1/2 part of DT reducer into the mix to help. mixing (with catalyst 401,402,403) and spraying PPG DP 90 it became lead free, it also became a little thicker, add that to the new mix ratio of 2:1 instead of 1:1 ...If you want uv protection due to the fact that dp-90 fades fast and turns milky then there are satin flat clears out there to choose from PPG 2060 and a regular clear with DX685 flattening agent is what some guys do but i dont think the clear sticks very well to dp-90 for very long,results very...mine is temp for now until summer ,It already shows dirt/roadgrime/scuffs..power washes some what clean and will do for now,also make sure you let it cure for 4-5 days no rain or water on it ,It will water mark badly ,Keep in mind i am no painter i just took a crash course in PPG DP-90 and was around the bodywork and dp-90 application,There tons of threads on this ,just look around..Hope a paint guy can chime in on this im sure i missed alot...good luck

You can put a sealer over it since primer is not moisture proof

so my original question was, can i "just" use primer? or do i have to do primer+ a base coat... i'm trying to get away cheaply hehehe

I was under the assumption that epoxy primer ppg dp-90 was a truly moisture proof primer it says on the can that it is a sealant thats why they put it on boat trailers and use it in marine apps,In my paint i know he used a ppg flex n flat so it would hold up longer,But your right a top coat of flatten or satin clear wouldn't hurt...why not just go jd Blitzblack or hotrodz flats for top coat...cheap ?

Its my understanding that epoxy primer does not need a top coat, it is almost like a rubber film when it sets up, Which is why you have to top coat it before it sets up completely. If you dont top coat it in time, it needs to be completely scuffed before applying another coat or 2k primer coat.
I have shot epoxy primer a few times on different projects and its amazing how durable that stuff is.
There is a site I use for paint advise autobody101. They helped me alot when I restored my charger

Here is my answer to your question:

Yes, you can use just the EPOXY primer, BUT it does not have any UV resistance. If it is exposed to sunlight for a peroid of time it will become chalky. This can be scuffed off with a red scotch brite pad. The primer if applied correctly and to the mfg's spec will protect the metal from rusting, it just may not look right after a period of time.

For keeping it cheap but looking good, I would shoot the epoxy, then top coat it with an good industrial enamel like Rustoleum or for a little more money a single stage urethane would be great.

I'm going to shoot the primer, then top it with the Kirker hot rod black urethane, i think that should do it.

For your frame, you're fine just using the epoxy primer. It's won't see the sun, so UV protection won't matter. The stuff is amazing. Bazzar- did you seal your truck before shooting the epoxy, or spray right over your bodywork? I've used PPG's Omni black epoxy primer and it shows everything (edge mapping) right through it.
