What distributor should i buy?
I put the new motor in a couple of weeks ago and had the carb looked at today,and the guy said have a bad distributor.So i amd asking for your advice on what would be the best buy?Not really after power but it wouldnt be bad to have............Thanx guys

I went with a mallory HEI unit. Painless wiring, accurate, big bright sparkies! It was about $150. Plus add in new wires.

I would go with a junkyard HEI....they can usually be found for $30 or less anywhere. Add a new cap and rotor and you are usually good to go

You can get pretty good deals on non computer controlled HEI units from the salvage yard. I got one a couple months ago for $60 bucks (already pulled). IMO, HEI is absolutely worth the investment... especially if you have to replace your distributor anyway.

i have a old hei out of a blazer but was maybe thinking new since everything else is new on the truck

Stock HEI's are the best. Your old one should be fine. The only thing that goes bad in them is the module.

you can get a nice rebuilt one on ebay for less then 100 bucks. I got one and it was polished also. I payed about 90 all together.

I bought an Accel for my truck, when the "junkyard" HEI tanked on me at an intersection (another story).
Anyway, it was remanufactured, and cost about $100, with a warranty. Truck runs great! Way better than the old HEI.

If you have any type of a performance motor stay away from stock HEI's, they go away at about 4600 rpm's.

redbowtie is onto something about the range of power provided by the HEI. Also a HEI builds up enegry as the rpms go up so you don't get a constant feed of power from the beginning, but you could always tap in a MSD 6A to solve that problem.

I would stay away from the imported stuff, like Proform. Even the new Mallory HEI is made in Tawain or China! Most ignition guys, like Dr. Jacobs, say a stock GM HEI distributor, coil, and module are hard to beat for everyday driving. A inexpensive step up from stock is an Accel Blueprint distributor. These are GM cores with new bushings, cap, and module, and come with adjustable vacuum advance and extra sets of springs. All you have to add is an internal coil. I've had one since 94, but it now has MSD cap, coil, and module. Accel also makes a pre-74 points distributor in the Blueprint line.

I went with a Mallory Unilite. I've had bad luck with rebuilt parts. New is not that much more and is more likely to work as it should.
