Newbie just bought a 72' C10

I just bought a 72' Chevy C10 locally and will be picking it up Friday. Here is the listing on eBay.

I have two friends (classic truck owners) that I consulted with before making the purchase who gave me some tips to look for any major rust or mechanical problems. I looked it all over and everything looked good. To my suprise there was very minimal rust and no evidence of major patch ups or anything. I drove it and it runs great. I got it from a mechanic who gave me a run down of all the restoration he's done on it personally with all the service paperwork, etc.

I ended up getting it for $4,000. All in all, I feel good about it as it is about 85% restored. I had the money together so I'm not broke and hope I didn't get totally ripped off. This is my first classic truck so I plan on putting a lot of work in on it and really learning the ropes.

My goals are a full restoration to original specs for the most part and I may do some custom tweaks to help improve mpg, etc. I only have a handful of pics and will be posting more and doing a build thread as well.

I will know more once I pick it up of course but any suggestions on where to start? Any comments or ideas to help a newbie? Thanks!

Welcome to the best site there is,your truck looks excellent,
More you read on here, better you'll feel about owning it,
Drain the differential fluid,go get 75/90 weight gl5 gear oil and a transfer pump....don't forget to take your old gasket with you, autozone had the gasket and everything else, after you pull the diff cover, clean it up,sand it to rough it up a bit, take a bungeecord and hang it in your garage or off a branch on a tree and paint it before you put it back on..let it dry a day or so over night.....It's an important, often overlooked preventative measure that only needs to be drained and refilled every few years or so there after....this is a small, inexpensive, relaxing project that'll make you feel pretty damn good when your done.

Re: Newbie just bought a 72' C10

Check your transmission fluid, warm up your truck to operating temp...and keep it in park, make sure it's warmed up,check the fluid, nice dark pink color,if not, change it.
Get an owners manual that goes for your year range for proper torque and sequence when tightning bolts and what not,it's invaluable info to have.
The stupidest question is the one you were too prideful to ask.
You've got thousands of men on this site who have figured out just about every tip or trick in the book to keep these things runnin right so ASK when you need to know sumthin.....

Looks really clean. About the only thing cosmetically I can see it needs from the one pic you posted, are some hubcaps. You've already got wheels that are meant to fit hubcaps, so you're ahead of the game.

Here's what I did. In fact, I just got them installed yesterday. Check out my other posts for details on how to do the work yourself. Your truck would look pretty cool with black steelies, and silver hubcaps.

I don't know for sure if these will fit your truck, but they would definitely look cool http://www.ebay.com/itm/67-68-69-70-...sories&vxp=mtr

Welcome to the board from NC!!! That is a great looking truck you have there. If you are going to do a complete factory restoration there are plenty of useful threads that will help you out. Just my two cents, drive the wheels off the truck and fall in love with it before tearing it into a million pieces. You will learn a lot about the truck and figure out what you really want to do with it. Here are some threads that may help you out on your journey

Thank you! Despite the good pics, she needs a lot of work. Running great but needs some loving. Here's an updated pic.
