Troubleshooting the fiber optic gear indicator light

My indicator light has never worked since I've owned the truck. I recently spruced up my instrument cluster, and replaced all the bulbs (including the bulb that goes to the fiber optic cable). Unfortunately, it still doesn't light up. Anything else I can check to get it working?

Re: Troubleshooting the fiber optic gear indicator light

Did you check to see if the fiber optic line is still connected to the pointer?

Yeah, it is. I disconnected it and pulled off the plastic hood so I could paint it, and then put it all back together

It could have fallen back out, I had the same prob and ended up putting a drop of crazy glue on it to hold it in. As long as the line is plugged all the way in on both ends and your bulb is good you should have light, as long as the line isn't broken. There's no much that can go wrong with it otherwise

Ok. Thanks. I'll check that. Wouldn't surprise me if the cable is broken. I hope they still sell them...

Re: Troubleshooting the fiber optic gear indicator light

You can still get them, I'm pretty sure LMC and Classic parts has them, as well as a few others. Good luck and lets us know what you find!

Re: Troubleshooting the fiber optic gear indicator light

As with any fiber optic, they break really easy. There's some F.O. work coming up at my job, maybe I'll grab a few feet of it and see if I can make some new ones. It shouldn't be too tough. I know a guy that rigged some up so his kids' pinewood derby car had head lights!

I am sure you checked but no kinks or sharp bends?

Now I want to check mine and see if it works.

Re: Troubleshooting the fiber optic gear indicator light

The gear indicator is supposed to light up? I had no idea.

If you do make some, I would be interested.

Re: Troubleshooting the fiber optic gear indicator light

mine was broken, I pulled one out of a van at the wrecking yard. GM used them in lots of vehicles for ash tray/lights shifter lights etc... Just need to make sure it's long enough and use it. If the bulb it's hooked to works and it doesn't light the indicator the optic is probably broken or your indicator has been painted or some thing like that
