Dear Gas Cap,

You looked so bright and shiny when I pulled you out of that box the other day. You are doing a good job of keeping gas from sloshing out when I make right turns and you look really good on the outside of that shiny red truck.

But why, WHY, do you let the inside of my pickup smell like the inside of a gas can on a sunny day? I made sure you were the vented type when I picked you and I can make your seal crack just blowing on you... yet on a hot day when I smell gas and I remove you from the filler neck - there is so much pressure that it almost blows you out of my hand!

I think I'll ask my friends on the internet if they've ever seen other gas caps like you and what they did if they have.

Smelling the fumes,

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

Remove tank from cab, and replace with a Boyd welding tank under the bed. Problem solved forever.

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

I don't do underbed tanks so my path has always been to repair stock stuff.

I've had excellent luck with Stant brand gas caps which come in the blue and yellow box.

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

Are you sure its the cap? If it's the original tank I have seen many have very small pin holes that expand on hot days allowing fumes out. Just a thought.

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

Probably just the rubber hoses, old and cracked, allowing fumes to escape with all that pressure. As for your "vented" cap, it's defective.

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

I agree, get the fuel out of the cab. However I had a Stant cap as well that worked perfectly.

All good points. As for mine, the only time I smelled gas was when the seal finally expired on the cap (after many years). So I got a new locking cap at my local NAPA. Problem solved.

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

r u sure thatu got a vented cap??

if you went and asked for a 71 or 72 chevy gascap the proper factory one is a nonvented gascap as those years vented the tanks thru the charcoal cannisters to the carb

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

I'm going through the same thing. Found out the vent line that is suppose to go to the charcoal cannister was cut, plugged and the cannister missing. Also my hoses in the cab needed to be replaced. Needless to say I'm getting a Boyd tank.

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

The truck is a '69. It doesn't have the vapor handling tubes on it. In fact the tank is a brand new replacement. When I started working on the truck I smelled gas and thought about a Boyd but got high centered on where to fill it at. Well, I screwed up and bought a new factory replacement tank. Put in the sending unit and ran steel line out of the truck so there's no rubber inside. The cap came in the yellow and blue box. If I press it to my lips and blow it I can overcome the spring and get air through it. I guess that is more than the tank can do though. I'm thinking of putting a toothpick in there to hold the vent part open and see what happens for a day....

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

brand new stant cap here. leaked and stunk! In the garbage it went. Put my original back on that was still in decent shape and no problems. Most of these parts just aint what they used to be! Maybe you just got a bum cap.

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

I have a 70 with the charcoal cannister, so do I have a non-vented system?

Re: Dear Gas Cap,

3/4 tons did not have the vent system and need a vented cap.

Replace your cap with a new vented Stant. If something was leaking, you would not have a pressure buildup so its your cap

Ah, so all half tons had the charcoal canister from 69 up?

I don't think so. My '70 doesn't have the gas tank vent.

You will have a vent line coming off the tank. If you don't have one, you don't have the EEC and you just need a vented cap.
