Having trouble decoding my VIN.

I am having a hard time finding the rest of the info to complete breaking down the vin on my 84 K30. I am good until I get to the 9th 10th and 11th designation. All the tags say turn over to other side for info but I can not find the other side of the vin breakdown chart. Also when I try to run the whole vin on other sites it says that it is invalid. I have checked it three times. So this is what I got. 1GBHK34W BUT when I get the next three 2EV I dont know what they are. The last six are just the sequence number.

I am trying to get the vin# straight so I can track down the previous title holder and see about getting a title for it since I bought it without one. The vin tag is kind of hard to see. I was wanting to run the vin to make sure it came up with the right year and everything before I pursue the title. Can someone help me here.

I end up running it on two other sites and it comes back as an 84 K30. I would like to know where the 9th 10th and 11th digits info can be found though. Any links.

From what Ive read on another thread before, your cab was originally a 84K30, most likely a cab & chassis.

Thanks JKNIGHT! Yeah it is a cab and chassis. I just wasn't sure what the other three digits broke down to. The ninth just says check digit. Is that just a random number or letter they throw in there. Then there was the year- 10th digit and the 11th is plant which I dont see a V

Thanks. Where did you find the info that Pontiac was the production facility. Now I guess the only thing to find out is who last had this truck titled so I can get ahold of them and see about getting a title issued. If I can get a title then I can start on this one after the C10 and K10 short beds are done.

Yes - a random number generated to verify it's not a bogus (ie "made up") VIN.

A check digit is not random at all. There is an algorithm used to derive the check digit from the other numbers and characters in the string being verified. Here is a simple example...

Maybe you want to add a check digit to your phone number. Maybe your algorithm is to add up the digits of your phone number, then use the "ones" component of that as your check digit.

713-555-1212. add up those digits, sum is 32. So your check digit is 2. If you put that digit at the end, you would code this as 71355512122. If someone saw 71355512129, they would know this is invalid...

If people don't know the algorithm, they won't know what to use for the check digit. Helps combat fraud.

Agree. It appears "random" in the sense that it is not a constant value assigned to represent a condition as are the other digits. To the casual observer it varies without an obvious connection.

I sacrificed a little bit of accuracy for brevity's sake.
