Replacing axle seal on my 62

i'm in need of some information regarding replacing my axle seal on my 62 1/2 ton. i've been into alot of fords through the years but not one of these old style 62 diffs. does the axle retainer unbolt from the backing plate or do i remove the rear cover or take the 3rd member out to pull the axle. i figured i better ask first so i can purchase the gaskets i need before tearing it down.

thanks.

Re: Replacing axle seal on my 62

Assuming the 1962 rear end is the same as a 1960, the following pages from the 1960 Chevy Truck Shop Manual may prove helpful:

hey, you should come check out that rear in the 61 out at my place before you put too much work into this one- if it will work, you might just want to do the swap instead...

Re: Replacing axle seal on my 62

hi jon, yes i was thinking about that tonight. i have a appt to get the 62 aligned at 10:00 am tomorrow,if your going to be out there around 9:00-9:30 or so i will meet you there. that would be a much simpler way to get the job done and to do whats needed anyways.if not i'll call you tomorrow and we can set up a game plan.

thanks jon,
kent.
