Adding Power Steering to 292

I picked these brackets and pump from an early 70's pickup it had an air pump on the driver side, one belt was driving the air pump and power steering.

Can I adapt them to install the p/s on my truck?

Perhaps moving the alternator to the air pump location?

Re: Adding Power Steering to 292

Fickle Finn,,Did those come from a 292?They look a lo like my 250 brackets.I do know that 292 brackets are different from 250 ones.292 are also very hard to find.I'm not familiar with all of them but those have a larger hole in the center but look the same as mine otherwise.
You should be able to test fit by just fitting the bracket you have laid out (to the left in the pic).Try setting it in place by itself and you should be able to see if things are going to fit.It looks like the bracket will interfere with the bypass hose but will be hard to tell without putting it in place.

Re: Adding Power Steering to 292

They are from a 250 (4.1l). was just curious if I could move the alt to upper location which is where the air pump was located.

Guess I will just have to do the test fit to see what happens.
thx

Re: Adding Power Steering to 292

Tried to see if the brackets would work on my 292 today - bah no they won't. Would take a ton of work so not worth the time.

Went back to look at the truck, it is a 1976 Chevy, 250 with integrated head.

I will put the brackets up for sale after I figure a fair price.

Re: Adding Power Steering to 292

Is the pump pulley stamped with the part number 354539AA?

Re: Adding Power Steering to 292

No big deal. I have a '78 250 integral headed boat anchor in my 67. I'm installing P/S on it and my early pump had the wrong pulley on it. I found another one that was "good enough" but it should have a flat pulley on it. That pulley is impossible to find. All I could find was the part number and some pictures.

Re: Adding Power Steering to 292

Don't worry about that part number. I just looked at the picture and saw that it was a non-keyed pulley. My pump is keyed. I'll live with what I have for now. As long as this motor is still chuging it has a home and I'll burn up a $8.00 belt every once in a while to get p/s. its just mis-aligned a tad. I don't drive it much anyway. Thanks though!
