starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
I bought a brand new starter because the truck started hard....before I got the new starter the truck turned over and when I went to move it it turned over twice then nothing, not even turning over,so I got the new one on and still it won't turn over....the only thing I do know is that there is power to the small terminal on the starter, the big terminal looks like a ground wire to me but I'm not sure.....can anyone help?

Also is there like a starter fuse or anything like that that could be blown?

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
the small wire should have power during cranking, the larger one next to it is battery power- hot all the time.

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
it's possible that the cable was on its way out before and the movement from changing the starter finished it off, or the connection is dirty. that cable is the size it is because it has to deliver full battery voltage to the starter, any compromise to that would make it crank lazy-or not at all. if the power wires to the starter check out, check the ground to the block. make sure all connections are clean and look at the entire cable for trouble spots, i've had a cable get the insulation nicked in one spot, that caused corrosion and deteriorated the cable. hope this helps.

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
There are 2 small terminals on the starter, maybe you have it on the wrong one now, it won't work if you are on the wrong one. And as stated earlier the big cable goes directly to the positive side of your battery, just check to make sure the cable isn't burnt/damaged and that you connections are clean

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
Typically the starter will be ground through the housing to the engine block. As others have posted, make sure your battery to starter wire is in good shape and not corroded, just because you clean the connectors doesn't mean the wire isn't bad. If you've had corrosion on the terminals then it is best to replace the entire wire because the corrosion will travel up the wire causing increased resistance and a dragging starter.

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
The battery to starter wire is hot all the way,the small red one is too,the ground wire is grounded to the water pump....still won't turn over, the starter is not engaging at all....could I have the small wires backwards?

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
Yes,The wire could be backwards. Not all starter solenoids have the I or R terminal. Your solenoid will have at least one small and two large terminal. One of the large terminals is connected directly to the starter internals the other to the main battery cable. Do you have points or electronic ignition? If you have points the R or I terminal will be connected to the coil+ to give the points 12v so cranking will be easier. If you have electronic you will probably not use this terminal. The S terminal is connected to the Neutral Safety or Clutch Switch which are connected to the Ign switch. It is usually a purple wire. If you do not have 12v on the purple wire with the ign switch held in the start position, trace it back to the switches and find out where you lose it. You can jump the solenoid from the battery connection to the S pole and it should crank. Try those tests and you will have a better idea what the problem is. The wiring info above is assuming that you have a regular Delco Remy style starter, the aftermarket hi po and gear reduction ones are similar. Jay

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
Jerry, on the starter solenoid there are two small connectors, one is marked "S" this is where the Purple wire should connect to, this wire comes from the clutch/neutral saftey switch via the ignition switch.
If like you say in your above post, then your solenoid is bad or you have the wire connected wrong. When you apply 12 volts to the 'S" terminal on the solenoid it should engage the solenoid and apply battery 12v to the starter windings causing the starter to spin. |

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
I have n electronic ignition and the wires are all hooked up and still nothing...this starter is brand newso the solenoid should be good...I can jump it across the terminals and it turns over....maybe a neutral safety switch problem?

Re: starter problems...please save mepr some nerves
Got it all figured out and works...had it grounded to the frame and the block and I went to turn it over and it fried the ground to the block so I cut it off and it worked
