Tranny Cooler Question? External only?

I need to replace my radiator on my 63. It currently has a 350 crate & 350 turbo trans. The truck originally came with 3 on the tree manual trans and it still has the original radiator without a tranny cooler built in. The guy who put in the 350/350 just added an external trans cooler. It seems to work fine but wondering if I should buy a radiator with trans cooler in it instead? I am looking at this radiator from Classic Industries. Has anyone used this one?

Thanks for any help

Re: Tranny Cooler Question? External only?

u can use that radiator , alot of car/trucks from the factory that way , the po used the external so he wouldnt have to replace the radiator , pretty common with trans swaps
i would recm a champion radiator , all alum and cheaper with lifetime warrenty

Re: Tranny Cooler Question? External only?

I would recommend using a radiator with a cooler and in addition use an external cooler.

Are you running a shroud with that Champion radiator? Is it a direct fit and do all stock brackets line up?

Question Re: Tranny Cooler Question? External only?

Hmmm....wonder why Classic even made a dedicated manual-tranny-one?

Agreed, since the OP is in Minnesota. The heat exchanger in the radiator will help get the trans fluid up to temp quickly, and the external cooler will keep temps reasonable. I wouldn't rely on the heat exchanger in the radiator alone to cool the trans fluid, but it is definitely beneficial to have inline if the truck will be driven in cold ambient temps.

Hey Blazins10, where did you get the shroud to go with your electric fan? Any pics?
