71 4x4 T-350-c99404 transfer case Question?

71 chevy with turbo 350 and C99-404 transfer case,,it has been leaking so went to put gear oil in it to top it off,,BUT noticed the speedo cable has ATF dripping off of it and when I opened the fill plug it appeared to have ATF in the transfer case? Does this transfer case share ATF with the trans? I thought it would take Gear oil? Thanks

Should be a seal inbetween the two, so must be leaking thru. Have you ever changed the t.case oil maybe someone used atf in it.

Have never changed it,,after doing some reading I guess you can run anything you want in the 205 transfer case? since it seems to have ATF in it was thinking of just topping it off with some dextron,,seems you can just pee in these things and it will work?

They started running Dextron in the NP203s (full-time transfer case) when they came out. And,about that time, they started saying Dextron was good for gear oil because of improvements to it's formula.

Re: 71 4x4 T-350-c99404 transfer case Question?

I always use synthetic in my gear drives and standard trans, Atf may work well but never went that way but if it is leaking threw from the auto trans what would it hurt, just make sure the trans isn't pressuring it threw to the t.case overfilling it and the trans going low, may not happen but something to watch for.
