Is it necessary to run a gas tank cover?

You know that flimsy cardboard material that came stock to cover the gas tank? Yeah, the one I tore out today because it was all dried out and ripped....

Is it necessary to run one? They sell an exact replacement at Brothers for $28, or a carpet one for $99. Just wondering if it can just as easily be painted, where it goes behind the bench seat anyway?

No you don't have to have a gas tank cover. I am making one for my truck since I have bucket seats.

Re: Is it necessary to run a gas tank cover?

PO of mine just ran a scrap piece of cardboard back there. I took it out and didn't run anything for a bit then put some material over the opening of the back of my seat, but nothing on the tank itself.

Personally, I like the look of that bare galvanized tank behind the seat

My truck hasn't had one for at least two years and no ill effects

Most trucks seem to have lost theirs in a like manner. It does finish things out and provide a little noise control. To me it is worth having as long as you are not fighting rodents over it.

Don't worry A.J. the rodents will be to busy tearing the foam out of your new seat cover to even notice the gas tank cover, haha.

I like them when they are covered in matching carpet.

Lol. Thanks guys. I'll run without anything for a while before I do anything, to see if it's even necessary

Re: Is it necessary to run a gas tank cover?

My truck doesn't have one. PO had a piece of some kind of carpet thrown in there, but it obviously wasn't made for this truck. Can't see it with the bench seat, so I'm good with it.
