Cam timing

I have a decent book on engine rebuild, but have a question concerning reinstalling my new cam.

I have #1 piston at TDC just by turning over the engine until I see the cylinder fully extended. Are there marks I should be looking for to align the cam to the crank correctly??

I also bought the new timing set and want to make sure it goes on right as far as the three Keyways??

Hope this makes sense, I am a newbie to engines!!

There are marks on the timing gears. Align them with a straight edge of some sort. If you are building a wicked motor a degree wheel might be preferred.

Thanks oldtrucknut , That explains the timing set, but what about the cam orientation?

Is that what the timing wheel is for?? I have seen one before.

More specifcaly, the marks on the gears should point toward each other.

I have the lifters out and the timing set removed. I cant just put the Cam in at any degree can I?

As long as the lifters are out, you can put it in any way you want as long as you line up the gears before you put the timing chain on. The gear that goes on the cam has a little hole that fits a nipple on the front of the cam. There is only one way to put it on, as is the crankshaft gear.

One other thing, make sure that you put the safety tab plate on the gears when you install them, they should be in your new kit. It is a thin metal plate that goes under the bolt heads, then you pry them up over the heads, so they will not loosen and fall out. Glad that I could help out!!
