Trailer Brakes

Has anyone wired up a trailer brake system in a 72? I've never wired anything like this up before and any help would really be appreciated. Do I have to run new wires all the way up from the trailer brake unit? Is there a better unit to use than any others? Thanks guys

Re: Trailer Brakes

This is the controller I've installed in all my vehicles. It has an adjustable output without the fancy display. http://www.tekonsha.com/content/prod...1435&part=9030

It is a 4 wire hookup. Power, ground, output from brake light switch and feed wire that goes to the trailer plug. The last wire is the only one that needs to be run outside the passenger compartment.

Since you're wiring brakes, I assume you either already have or are adding a 7-way trailer connector? There should be a 12v positive feed (20A self-resetting breaker) to the connector as well to supply the breakaway system with power.

I chose to run the trailer harness ground into the cab as well (I attached it to the parking brake bracket) to protect it from the weather and ensure my trailer brakes have a good clean ground source.
