Growling noise from steering pump - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I recently put power steering in the truck, holy crap what a difference!

However, if I start the truck when it's cold outside, the pump makes a growling/grinding noise. It stops making noise once the engine has warmed up and doesn't make any noise at all if it's warm outside when I start the truck. It's been on for about a month, so I don't think it needs any further bleeding. It's not low on fluid. It was a junkyard pump from a '76 and the gear is from an '81 so I switched the high pressure outlet to accomodate the metric thread gear line.

What do y'all think? Get a rebuilt one? Is there something I can trouble shoot?

you sure the fluid is still full? I had this happen when replacing a pump. Once I had did the steering wheel type bleeding, it had sucked down enough to run it low. Unless there could be some metal in the pump gear housing.

I'll check again when I get home. I checked after I did the initial bleeding and it was full. At least that would be an easy fix. It seems weird how it stops when it warms up. Would the fluid expand that much?

Could have a crawfish stuck in it or something ..

I would also run some Lucas Power steering conditioner in the fluid, It may have a little air still in it and by the time it gets warm it has found a high spot.

This is my idea too. When the engine is cold everythings a little harder to turn making the belt slip. Plus the alt is charging harder after sitting all night and making the belt slip if not good and tight.
