46 pickup on S10 what rear axle?

Hi, new here. I bought a 1946 Chevy 1/2 ton truck in pieces. no axles, old IH frame. So I am reading all these S10 swaps here and I thinking about it, fits my wallet better. I've got a modified SBC 350 and 700r4 that's destroyed a 10 bolt. So can anyone recommend another heavier duty rear that would fit an S10? My son recommended a 12 bolt.
I also checked www.gmheritagecenter.com and found 1941 1/2 ton specs for the rear end 69 1/8" over wheel hubs and 60 3/8" inner wheel tread. How do these measurements relate to "hub to hub" and "flange to flange" measurements? I don't know what to look at as far as rear axle widths. Mel

welcome to the forum.check out my build page (project moonshine).we used a chevelle 12 bolt.if your motor truly is a tire smoker than you should look into a 12 bolt.i believe it is around 62" flange to flange.other people have used a f*** explorer 8.8.you can pick one up with posi and disc brakes for a few hundred bucks.good luck.

Re: 46 pickup on S10 what rear axle?

Thanks for the suggestions CHIZZLER. If the 8.8 will fit into a '46, just might fit my wallet. 12 bolts are getting well used at this point-probably needing new innards. Your '40 is looking fine, nice write up too! Good to see another in Oregon.

Well, I got set straight! My son said no F--d in this truck. So I going for the 12 bolt-I do really want his help in this project, even though he's the culprit who blew a hole in the 10 bolt.

Re: 46 pickup on S10 what rear axle?

I''m keeping an eye out. Just setup my blast cabinet over the weekend, got some pipe stuff to build a Franzinator (hope it works) as a water separator. Need to blast those rusty parts. Also replacing the sliding barn doors with an overhead door-sure like your shop front. Nice Suburban and '40 truck -inspiration to keep me going. Mel

Re: 46 pickup on S10 what rear axle?

There is no blue paint on the rear axle, just a different bolt pattern on the wheels, and most people can not see that 1/4' difference. 3:73 disc brakes and a posi makes for a good product, JMTCW
