Dana 60 front opinions

recently purchased an 86 short with D60 front/14 rear. Rear has locker. Wanting both fronts pulling when mudding so looking for reasonable options.....no air stuff just too much $. Are lockers ok for the front? Clutch types preferred for better steering? Anyone ever spool the front? Can you run with only one hub locked in if spooled or using other types for better steering while in tight places? too many ??

Re: Dana 60 front opinions

I have run a Lock Rite in a rear Dana 70 dually rear with 4 38.5 Boggers and a 475 inch big block with no issues. Have one in a Dana 60 front now in a '72 K5. Works very well.

lockright is awesome in a 60. it works very well in the rocks with 39s and big torque so mudding it will practically be unphased. it will do very well for mud.

Re: Dana 60 front opinions

The locker in the rear is fine, but I wouldn't run one in the front. It could be rather jerky as it locks/unlocks....unpredictable.
In my own stuff, I have run a Truetrac and a clutch-type posi unit, at different times and trucks. Both with Detroit locker rears. I would say the the locker itself is more noticeable than either of the fronts, especially on the street, where you couldn't run the front anyway(unless it was really snowy)
The locker will be more clunky with a Manual transmission too.
I abused that Truetrac with much bigger tire than they recommend too, and all I ever broke was a passenger side axle. Shredded it right at the joint, killed both halves too.
I wouldn't even consider a spool up front. You really need the differential action to steer at all. If you watch the guys at a truck pull, they jump out and unlock one hub to drive around the pit area

Re: Dana 60 front opinions

Ive been installing detroit e-lockers in the front of our service trucks for a few years now and have never had a failure. Not a cheap alternative but the guys love em. These are in f-450s with diesels and weigh around 14000#s so they can take some abuse.

plenty ok. pain in the ass if you ask me. my solution was hydro assist steering. one finger steering with 39s.

Re: Dana 60 front opinions

The guys that I have seen doing that are running a spool in a dedicated pulling truck. There wouldn't be much point with other types of differentials.

Re: Dana 60 front opinions

I had a 67 cj-5 that I sold a few years back that had reverse cut dana 6os front and back with ARB air lockers and I would run one of the front hubs unlocked a lot when on the street (snow covered roads).. didn,t hurt a thing. you don,t want to run 2 lockers on snow covered roads or you will be in the woods really quick. On the trails it was a bear to keep it where you wanted to go, Of course it only had a 83 1/2" wheel base

Re: Dana 60 front opinions

Tru trac acts like an open diff under moderate load, so no need to worry on snow and ice. There is no need to unlock one side. Both tires only lock up under heavy load, or you can lock it yourself by standing on the brakes a bit while using some throttle. Best of both worlds for the price.
